Prepare Yourself to Pray in the Spirit

Ephesians 6:18 tells us to "...pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests."  How can we  "pray in the Spirit"?

I feel that it is crucial that we prepare ourselves before we launch into prayer.  The way we need to prepare ourselves is contained in the previous versions of that same chapter of Ephesians.

First off, we need to understand fully that we are in a war everyday when we go out into the world.  Therefore, we need to ready ourselves completely for the day's battle ahead.  We do that by following Ephesians 6:13-17.  We trust in the Lord's mighty power, not our own.  We put on all the armor that God has provided for our protection.

To stand firm and strong, we need to stand in God's truth.  We need his righteousness protecting our hearts from the type of enemies we face.  We have to be nimble and light on our feet; to advance forward, to react quickly in any direction, or to take a step backward as the situation dictates, to maintain the peace.  We need a strong shield of faith to deflect what the enemy flings at us.  Our minds must be guarded by the assurance of blessed salvation.  When the best defense means taking the offensive, we wield the powerful sword of God's Word.

Now we may think we are prepared, but no soldier steps out onto the battlefield alone.  This is where our fellow warriors come in. We need to examine each other's armor and ensure all is strapped up tightly and ready to go.  Church, we must check each other carefully; look for frayed bindings, bandage up each other's wounds, and give each other moral support, instruction, and encouragement.

So now we enter the battlefield and we will soon find that we fight most effectively on our knees in strident prayer.  Since God has prepared us in truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation, now we are ready to pray in the Spirit.  Prepare yourselves completely in this way each time before prayer and you will find your prayer time to be more fruitful, focused, and effective.
